Opossums

The “Opposum” is a nocturnal animal, they sleep during the daytime and are active at night.  They live in nests built in trees and only come out at night to feed.  The species found in New Zealand is the Brushtail.

Hunting Opposum is a great source of entertainment for the hunter, but more importantly it is an essential part of Environmental protection and restoration.  They can be hunted by day using gun dogs to sniff them out, but are best taken at night using a spotlight on a 4WD or ATV.

As “kaitiaki” or guardians of the Forest, we take our responsibility seriously in eradicating these pests, which do huge damage to our native trees.  Join us in this important mission.

These days their fur is considered one of the most valuable part of the animal and in New Zealand it is used to make garments such as fur hats, scarves and other knitwear sold in many retail outlets.
